Liszt’s predestination for sacred music doubtless stemmed from his childhood, when he had close ties to Catholicism through his father. He went on to compose many works expressing the virtues of various saints, and to those works Martin Haselböck and the Orchester Wiener Akademie are devoting a series of recordings. The first volume features St Cecilia, with Cantantibus organis, St Francis of Assisi, with La prédication aux oiseaux (the first of his Deux Légendes for orchestra) and the Cantico del Sol di Francesco d’Assisi, and also St Francis of Paola, with St François de Paule marchant sur les flots (Deux Légendes, no. 2).While bearing little resemblance to Liszt’s secular compositions, these works are equally impressive in their beauty and refinement. This recording, while providing us with a fine opportunity to witness once again the composer’s admirable skills, highlights an aspect of Liszt’s work that is all too often forgotten.

Sans doute la prédestination de Liszt pour la musique sacrée remonte-elle à son enfance, au cours de laquelle il entretient, par son père, des liens étroits avec le catholicisme. Liszt nous livre alors de nombreuses œuvres, dans lesquelles il laisse son auditeur découvrir la vertu des saints qu’il met en musique, et auxquelles l'Orchester Wiener Akademie et Martin Haselböck consacrent une série discographique. Le premier volume met notamment à l'honneur Saint François, avec la Prédication aux oiseaux et le Cantico del Sol di Francesco d'Assisi, mais aussi François de Paule avec les deux Légendes pour orchestre, ainsi que Sainte Cécile avec le Cantantibus organis..Peu semblable à ses compositions profanes, cette partie de la production de Liszt n’en est pas moins spectaculaire par son raffinement et son sublime. Ainsi, c’est à nouveau son génie qui s’offre à nos oreilles, à travers un enregistrement mettant en lumière un pan de l’œuvre lisztien bien trop souvent oublié.
